‘Ready for the way climate chaos will change things?‘

Welcome to the Great Unravelling – Navigating the Polycrisis of Environmental and Social Breakdown.
For over 50 years, we’ve been warned that the costs of exponential growth of population and consumption, and the exploitation of people and planet, would eventually come due for all of us. The days of warning are now over. The days of reckoning are here.
Over the coming months, years, and decades, our primary challenge—individually and collectively—will be to navigate this “Great Unraveling” of environmental and social crises in ways that ensure the most collective wellbeing, while putting humanity on a path of resilience, justice, and sustainability.
Post Carbon Institute’s new report, Welcome to the Great Unraveling lays out in stark terms the reality we face, what it means for both human civilisation and the global ecosystem, and what we can do in response.
Welcome to the Great Unraveling calls attention to four main things:
- the alarming, rapidly changing environmental and social conditions of the Great Unraveling;
- the need to grapple with complexity, uncertainty, and conflicting priorities—hallmarks of the Great Unraveling;
- the need to maintain social cohesion within societies and peaceful relations between them during the Great Unraveling, while implementing key changes in collective behaviour and managing the negative consequences of past failures to act; and
- the personal competencies that are needed to understand what’s happening during the Great Unraveling and to respond constructively, primarily by building household and community resilience for this precarious time.
Asher Miller, Executive Director of Post Carbon Institute and one of the co-authors of the paper will join us for a discussion of the report’s key conclusions, in particular how we should individually and collectively respond to the Great Unraveling.
This event time is set to accommodate various time zones. If you would like to bring your evening meal please do.
Please bear in mind that, like other Cadence sessions, this workshop is not about actions to reduce carbon emissions – there are other fora to which we can refer you for that. The conversations we host are about adaptation – planning the adjustments we need to make in order to cope with climate change impacts.
