Developing an equity approach to social mobility – How can universities up their game? Lee Elliot Major, Professor of Social Mobility

November 8, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Lee Elliot Major, who is Britain’s first Professor of Social Mobility and is based at the School of Education, will deliver a talk on how universities can enhance the prospects for students from under-resourced backgrounds. He will discuss the equity approach, which challenges the deficit approaches in education and advocates for a new language that can help make our cultures genuinely inclusive, enabling talent to flourish from all backgrounds. His talk is particularly relevant given the increasing material and cultural divides in society.

Lee’s latest book, Equity in Education, argues for a rethinking of the policies intended to ‘level-up’ life opportunities. He was previously the Chief Executive of the Sutton Trust. He has also led the university’s work to establish a South-West Social Mobility Commission, which aims to help improve prospects across the region.

The talk will be followed by a drinks reception.
